Matthew LeRoy Spangler Merrill, Michigan Passed away Friday, January 4, 2019, at St. Francis Home. Age 94 years. The son of the late Esther Minerva (Slick) and Roy Monroe Spangler was born September 1, 1924 in Hemlock, Michigan. He married Melva McNier, February 14, 1948. His wife of 70 years survives him. Matthew served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He engaged in Farming in the Merrill area for 65 years. He was also employed as an Electrician with Dow Chemical Co. retiring in 1980 with 30 years of service. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving as a Trustee for many years. He was a member of the Gratiot A.R.C. Surviving are four sons and their wives, Randall and Gwen Spangler, Romeo, MI; Carl and Kathy Spangler, Cadillac, MI; Scott Spangler, Saginaw, MI; Aaron and Casalyn Spangler, Interlochen, MI; five grandchildren and their spouses, Lori Spangler; Lincoln and Kim Spangler; Melinda and Michael Colthard; Tracy and Steve Darnell; Evan and Jennifer Spangler; two great grandsons, Tyler and Nathan; a sister, Lena Burch; several nieces and nephews. Three sisters, Myrta Schulthies, Wanda Shinabarger and Iris LaDuke have predeceased him. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 10020 East Monroe, Wheeler, MI; Rev. Gary Bender will officiate with burial in Lakefield Twp. Cemetery. Friends may call at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel in Merrill from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and then at the church from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the funeral service.
