PENNEY, Matthew W., Freeland, MI. Much beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, Matt passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at his winter home in Stuart, Florida, with his wife Sis at his side. Age 87 years. Matthew Williams Penney was born in Saginaw on June 4, 1928 to the late Eugene and Lula Jean (Coates) Penney. Following his military service in the US Marine Corps during the end of World War II, he was employed by Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, Michigan, where he worked at several positions including as a journeyman electrician and in management from 1950 until his retirement in 1990. In addition to his work with Dow Corning, Matt also did private wiring of local homes and businesses, as well as working the family farm in Freeland. On May 12, 1951, he married the love of his life, Delores "Sis" Stroebel, who survives him. A devoted and loving family man, Matt made time for their activities, whether band or choir concerts, Little League games, his children's sports activities, or their academic endeavors. Always a quick wit, Matt particularly enjoyed telling jokes and humorous stories, as well as playing light-hearted practical jokes. He was also an avid, lifelong hunter, especially for deer, an activity which he enjoyed into his 80's. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland and VFW Post 1566. During his retirement years, he devoted much time to the making of various kinds of wine. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Sis; his three children and their spouses, Joyce (Tim) Schroeder of Bay City, Matthew M. (Nancy) Penney of Beaverton, and Nancy (Dale) Nickell of Glennie; eight grandchildren, Ashleigh Neiman (fianc, Ryan Fitzgerald), Rayechel (Nathan) Berger, Caitlyn (Joshua) Curry, Stephanie Nickell (friend Benjimen Wellman), Jason (Barbara) Juneau, Jared (Julie) Juneau, Timothy Schroeder II, and Heather (Shawn) Smith; eight great-grandchildren; his brother James (Peggy) Penney, and his sister Eunice "Penney" (Thomas) LaFever; his sisters-in-law Phyllis Russell, and Diana Fox; his brother-in-law, Donald "Bubs" (Sue) Stroebel; and numerous nieces and nephews. Matt was predeceased by his parents; his in-laws, Arthur S. and Geraldine G. Stroebel; two sisters and one brother and their spouses, Ione (Temple) Wilkin; Irene Velat; Hugh (Betty) Penney; three brothers-in-law, W. James Russell, Richard (Donna) Donoghue, and Michael Fox. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 300 Johnson Street, Freeland, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Richard Jozwiak will officiate with military burial in St. Andrews Cemetery, Saginaw, under the auspices of VFW Post 1566. Friends may call at the W.L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, and then at the Church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
