Morrison "Morrie" Martin Stevens, Sr.

Morrison Martin Stevens, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2024, peacefully and unexpectedly in his home. A proud, lifelong Thomas Township resident, Morrie was born February 14, 1947 and lived his entire life within two square miles.

Morrie graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1965 where he also was All-State in wrestling. A proud Spartan, Morrie graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Honors College. He was a member of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity and there met the redhead love of his life, Julie Ann Burnes, on a blind date. They had a beautiful marriage for over 50 years full of joy, devotion, travels and philanthropy.

Upon college graduation, Morrie joined the family business, Stevens Van Lines, as a Staff Accountant and ultimately became President of the company where he served for more than 45 years. He was a revered leader in the moving and storage industry, serving in several leadership roles including Chairman of the National Moving & Storage Association. He made lifelong industry friendships, served as a mentor to many and loved attending the countless conventions.

Morrie was respected for his strong financial acumen and served on several Saginaw area boards including: Citizens Bank-Saginaw, Delta College Foundation Board, Saginaw Valley State University Foundation Board, Covenant Healthcare Board and the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Committee. He and his late wife, Julie, were the driving forces behind the campaign that established the Stevens Center for Family Business Endowment. Additionally, Morrie recently served as co-chair for the SVSU College of Business extension.

An avid outdoorsman and conservationist, he dedicated many years of service on the Board of Boon & Crockett and was elected as President in 2014. Morrie along with his colleagues were very proud to help establish The Boone and Crockett Chair of Wildlife Conservation Position at Michigan State University. He relished his big game trips over the years, fall weekends at The Tuttle Marsh Club with his sons and "Hunting Cabin" friends and annual fishing trips out to Y Camp in Wyoming.

Morrie's life was filled with his hobbies and travels, family and friends. In the early years he raised chickens and sheep alongside raising his family. Morrie loved time with his children and grandchildren with a dog always by his side. He was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time working on his property, loved to play golf, ski and was always there to help out a friend in need. He looked forward to the blue Caribbean waters of St. Maarten every winter with his wife and cherished the summer weekends with family on Lake Margrethe.

Morrie is survived by his four children: Angie (Chris) Mehring, Lindsay (Brian) Eggers and sons Morrie (Dawn) Stevens, Jr. and Peter (Casey) Stevens, as well as their 10 grandchildren: William, Colin, and Andrew Mehring; Audrey and Garrett Eggers; Hazen and Grace Stevens; and Mac, Archer and Britton Stevens. He is also survived by his three siblings, Vergina "Ginny" (Stevens) Burke, John Stevens and Jim Stevens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie (Burnes) Stevens; his parents, Archibald Stevens, Sr. and Mother Rosalie (Nagel) Stevens; and brother, Archibald Stevens, Jr.

A memorial service will take place at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church of Saginaw, 121 S. Harrison St. Rev. Ted McCulloch will officiate. Friends may visit with the family at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 201N. Miller Rd. from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, and Wednesday at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service. Donations may be made in Morrie's name to the Thomas Township Parks or the First Presbyterian Church Endowment in lieu of flowers.
