She was born in Bay City on January 23, 1948 to the late John and Irene (Heller) Galbraith, and she moved to Standish at the age of six. Nancy began her love of education at the Normal School, a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Standish-Sterling High School in 1966. Nancy went on to earn her Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees in teaching from Central Michigan University. Miss Galbraith, as she was known to her students, used her degree to teach high school mathematics and chemistry for 31 years with the Merrill Community Schools. Following her retirement in 2001, she continued her education and deepening of her faith through the Lay Ministry Program at Holy Spirit parish and the Saginaw Diocese. Nancy had a strong Christian faith, and she shared that faith and hope with others by volunteering extensively throughout the community of her parish as a Lay Minister. In addition to volunteering through church, Nancy touched the lives of many through her generosity and thoughtfulness. She served on the Board of Directors for her condominium association, fed the hungry at the Eastside Soup Kitchen, and did financial work for the Partnership Center. Nancy had an unrelenting spirit and fierce determination to continue to live life. She took home prizes in competitive photography and captured nature through painting. She loved to travel, golf, play cards, bake and cook with both friends and family. Nancy was raised in a large family of seven children and is predeceased by parents, her brother Patrick Galbraith, and friend and travel companion Carole Weigand. She is survived by three sisters and two brothers: Mary (Austin) Webb, Barbara (Ned) Falk, Ruth Wagner, Richard (Patty) Galbraith, and Robert (Amy) Galbraith, and close friend, Hannah Hensel.
