Norma Helene Schmandt of Saginaw, Michigan
Beloved mother, nuna, sister, aunt, and friend passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at her home. She was 70 years old. Norma Helene Sian was born on October 18, 1951, in Regensburg, Germany, to the late Carl Elmer (Lorraine) Sian and Luzie Sophie Kempa. She was a graduate of Buena Vista High School. Following graduation, Norma attended Delta College where she received her Associate's Degree in Nursing. She married Henry Hernandez Sr.; he preceded her in death on November 13, 1999. Norma later married Larry Schmandt; he preceded her in death on July 9, 2010. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse with St. Luke's Hospital and Rheumatologists: Dr. Alberto Eugenio M.D. and Dr. Albert Manlapit M.D. Norma later worked for Victory Clinical Services and Saginaw Valley Endoscopy until her retirement. She was a longtime faithful member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church where she volunteered her time as a catechism teacher. Norma loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, and barbecuing. She was gifted with all crafts, especially crocheting, creating award winning Halloween costumes, gnomes, and special pieces for each family member. Norma enjoyed gathering as a family and watching camp themed horror films. Above all, she loved and cherished the time she spent with her family. Norma will forever be remembered for her fierce independence, her adventurous spirit, and for her wisdom and intellect.
Surviving are three children: Amy (Gene) Morrison of Saginaw; Lisa (Jeff) Slancik of Saginaw; Joshua (Virginia) Hernandez of Saginaw; 11 grandchildren: Brandon (Brittany) Morrison, Jesse Morrison, Jeremy Slancik, Maddy Slancik, Abigail Slancik, Angel Hernandez, Analicia Hernandez, Xavier Hernandez, Antonio Hernandez, Julius Hernandez, and Julissa Hernandez; one great-grandson, Dominick Morrison; three brothers: Robert (Maria) Sian of Saginaw; Kenny (Nancy) Sian of Canton; James Sian of Saginaw. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands: Henry Hernandez and Larry Schmandt; parents, Carl and Lorraine Sian and Luzie and Eric Borne.
Honoring Norma's wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at the W. L. Case & Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Friends and family may visit at the funeral home from 9:00 am. until the time of the memorial mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Heart Association.
