Beloved husband, dad, papa, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He was 78 years old. Pedro Manuel Prez was born in La Pryor, Texas, on October 19, 1940, to the late Manuel and Concepcin (Granado) Prez. He proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964, ascending to the rank of SP5 and Marksman. Pedro then re-enlisted in the United States Army Reserve, serving from 1964 to 1968. He married his cherished soul mate, Marina Torres, on October 11, 1969; she survives him. Pedro was employed by General Motors Steering Gear, retiring in 1999 after 34 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #12684, and the Pan Am Golf League. Pedro loved, treasured, and cherished his family. He enjoyed talking with his beloved son while watching sports and cheering for the University of Michigan and the Detroit Tigers. Pedro loved tackling projects around the house with his beloved daughter (his Reina) from washing cars to tinkering with the computer, they did it all with patience and pride. He fondly spent many hours reading and playing with his beloved granddaughters. He was an excellent cook, was very photogenic, had a great sense of humor, and had the most beautiful smile. Above all, Pedro will forever be remembered for his love for his family, his strong work ethic, his handyman skills, and his unparalleled bravery and indomitable spirit. Surviving are his wife, Marina Prez of Saginaw Township; son, Carlos Manuel (Crystal) Prez, daughter, Andrea Marina (Tom) Van Scyoc of Chicago; three granddaughters: Marisol Graciela Prez, Adriana Manuela Prez, and Valentina Marina Clara Van Scyoc; four brothers and two sisters: Olga Ortegon, Guillermo Prez, Maria Melendrez, Antonio Prez, Roberto Prez, Mario (Janie) Prez; four brothers-in-law: John (Mary Helen) Torres, Abel (Kathryn) Torres, the Honorable Isidore (Goharik) Torres, Eduardo (Betty) Torres; sisters-in-law Jodi Torres and Betty Garza Torres. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Concepcin Prez; father- and mother-in-law, Valentin and Francisca Torres; brothers-in-law Daniel Torres, Arnulfo Melendrez, Ramon Ortegon, and sisters-in-law Gloria Prez, Antonia Prez, Guadalupe Prez, and an infant sister-in-law, Yolanda Torres. A funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 910 N. 6th Avenue, Saginaw, MI. Rev. Fr. Francis Vorio, OFM Cap will officiate. Military Honors and burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan, under the auspices of the United States Army and VFW Post #822. Everyone attending Great Lakes National Cemetery is asked to arrive by 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to visit with the family at the W.L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. on Monday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Knights of Columbus Council #12684 will pray the rosary at 3:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening. Pedro will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to RAICES (Refugee And Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services).
