Peter “Pete” Gabriel Schantz
Hemlock, Michigan
Beloved husband, father, grandfather passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at his home, with his family at his side; at the age of 79 years.
The son of the late Isaac and Harriet (Burke) Schantz, Pete was born on February 27, 1943 in Petoskey, Michigan. He graduated from St. Francis High School with the class of 1962. Pete was a proud veteran of the United States Marines. He served as a Lance Corporal in the Vietnam War until he returned in 1966 as a Marine Reserve and was honorably discharged on January 8, 1969. Pete married Coleen Durow on October 27, 1979, in Saginaw, Michigan; she survives him. He worked as a Millwright at General Motors for 38 years of loyal and dedicated service. Pete was a member at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Charles. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus. After his retirement, Pete enjoyed watching bonfires, western movies, old school country and western music. Above all, Peter cherished the time spent with his family and loved ones.
Surviving besides his wife: Coleen Schantz; their children: Terrilee Miller, Derrick Schantz, Tamara (Robert) Young, Christopher Schantz (Connie Silvernaile), Jolie Schantz, Chelsey (Corey) Lonsway; grandchildren: Nicole, Michael, Sarah, Trevor, Mikayla, Brittney, Derrick, Cayden; sisters and brother: Anne Ryan, Bertha Dellapenta, Bernard (Joanne) Schantz, Theresa (Michael) Donnelly, Mary Roseanne O’Rourke-Bours; sisters-in-law: Judy Schantz, Karen Schantz, Gayle Schantz. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Pete was preceded in death by sister and brothers: Francis Schantz, Sister Lucretia “Mary” Schantz, Al Schantz, Joseph Schantz, John Schantz, Don Schantz, Fred Schantz, Tom Schantz, Louis Schantz.
Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 708 Sanderson Street, St. Charles, Michigan 48655. Rev. Fr. Jack Johnson will officiate with burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will take place under the auspices of the United States Marine Corps and American Legion Post 439. Friends may visit the family from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022 at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Road, Saginaw, Michigan 48609; and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
