On Monday, May 27, 2019, Phillip "Gregg" Velez, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away at the age of 82 in Naples, Florida, after battling cancer.
Gregg was born on December 30, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Philip and Emily (Adamek) Velez. After four years in the U.S. Navy he became an Electrician and later started a successful electrical business. On September 10, 1960, he married his first love, Violet Marie Smolarz, and together they raised two sons in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. They had been married for 47 years when she predeceased him in January of 2008. He is also predeceased by his sister, Mildred Parker of Troy, Michigan.
Gregg was an avid sailor, racing his sailboat "High Voltage" throughout the Great Lakes, he also enjoyed fishing, and helping people in any way he could. He enjoyed spending time at his northern Michigan home on Bois Blanc Island in the summer months and in Naples, Florida, during the winter. He also enjoyed traveling in his RV and spending time with his loving companion of the last 10 years, Kris Field.
Gregg is survived by his two sons: Philip "Greg" (Cindy) Velez of Saginaw, MI; and Charles "Chuck" (Charity) Velez of Davison, MI; four granddaughters: Morgan, Madison, Chloe, and Coral Velez; and some nieces and nephews. He will be missed dearly and will forever live in our hearts.
Friends are welcome to visit with the family on Friday, June 7, 2019, at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at a later date at Woodland Glade Cemetery on Bois Blanc Island. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy my wish to consider memorials to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
