Raymond Neil Hock

Raymond Neil Hock of Freeland, formerly of Auburn, Michigan

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away on December 4, 2020, after a valiant battle with Covid 19 and Lymphoma Cancer, at the age of 80. He was loved by so many and will be missed by all.

Ray was born on October 21, 1940, in St. Louis, Michigan, to the late Ivan Loyle and Inez Evelyn (McMahon) Hock. He was a proud 1958 graduate of Merril High School. Following graduation, he began working with Siler Chevrolet-Oldsmobile for a few years. Ray later began working at St. Mary’s Hospital for over 40 years, retiring in 2000 as the Director of Radiology. “I treated employees as I would want to be treated. That was very important to me. Their job satisfaction was a very high priority” Proof given by the numerous employees that always gave Ray the compliment that he was the best boss ever! He was always proud to hear that...proud of his extended work family.

Ray was a past president of the MSRT- Michigan Society of Radiologic Technologists. He held roles as the annual meeting chairperson, co-chaired the golf outings annually to raise educational scholarships for radiography students. He held several offices and always encouraged his staff to be active in the MSRT. Ray was Technologist of the Year in 1978.
Ray earned the respect of all he encountered as Director. The salespeople who called on him, the physicians he worked with in the hospital and throughout the state. The radiologists, his employees, and each ancillary department employee, by always sharing his ‘joke du-jour’ to create the smile and the positive mood.

He married the love of his life, Jeanne Therese Colling on April 7, 1989, in Saginaw, Michigan; she survives him.

From the 1960’s throughout the mid 2000’s, Ray enjoyed bowling with the people he loved, winning various awards along the way. He recalled with his family, the best reward of bowling were the “friendships and camaraderie”.

Above all, Ray loved music. He was always tapping his fingers, humming a tune, drumming a beat at inappropriate times, and whistling when he didn’t know he was whistling. Ray had the innate ability to connect with people through his music, because music was his soul. He began his career in music in 1964 joining the band “The Imperials”. He played with them through the late 1980’s; finishing his musical journey with his band, “5 Shades of Grey”. He shared his musical memories with his bandmates: brother, Wayne Hock, Bob Greif, Larry Seaver, John Bartle, John Ray Greif, Bob Hrcka, and Jeff Gray.

Following retirement, Ray worked at the Saw Mill Golf Course, owned his own home inspection business, and was selfless in helping many family and friends with all their needs. Ray will deeply miss attending his annual deer camp “RocknbabyRay’s” in Leelanau County, Michigan.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Jeanne (Colling) Hock; two daughters: Jody (Eric) Goodman and Julie Maczik and Randy Gross; step-son, Joe (Chelsea) Hanley; six grandchildren: Ellie Rae Goodman, Emma Goodman, Max Maczik, Molly Maczik, and Ford Hanley; great-grandson: Lincoln Abbott; two brothers and a sister: Wayne (Toni) Hock, Randy (Gale) Hock, and Janet (Bill) Smith. Also surviving are an aunt, Dorothy (Doyle) Fetterolf; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He also leaves the mother of his daughters, Sharon Hock; good friends and extended family, the Schneiders, Dave Moon and Jim Horwath.

He was preceded in death by his special friend, Donald Schneider.
