Robert L. Richardson, Jr. passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at the James E. Cartwright Care Center after a long illness. He was 89 years old. He was born on April 20, 1926, in Saginaw to the late Robert L. Richardson and Emmeline K. Richardson. Surviving him are his wife of 55 years, Jean Cummings Richardson, and three sons, Robert L Richardson III (Amy) of South Lyon, Michigan, Thomas M. Richardson (Karen) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Charles C. Richardson of Chicago, Illinois. He also leaves three grandchildren, Meghan Richardson, Jared Richardson and Daniel Richardson, all of Grand Rapids, and a sister-in-law Ann Cummings (Len) Smith of Carlsbad, CA.
He served in the U S. Army after graduation from Arthur Hill High School and was on a ship bound for the invasion of Japan when World War II ended. After his Army discharge, he attended the University of Michigan where he received both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a law degree in 1951.
Bob was an administrative assistant to Congressman Alvin Bentley for four years before becoming an Assistant U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan for several years. In 1958 he was elected Saginaw County Prosecutor and served for four years in that position. He was elected to the Michigan State Senate in 1964 where he served for ten years. That was followed by appointment to the Michigan Workers' Compensation Appeal Board, a position he held until his retirement.
He belonged to the Kiwanis Club and Saginaw Masonic Lodge #77, and he appeared onstage at Pit and Balcony in a number of productions. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Saginaw, where he sang in the choir for thirty years.
Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, 4790 Gratiot Rd. Rev. Kathryn S. Snedeker will officiate with burial at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. on Sunday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider the First United Methodist Church or the charity of their choice.
