Passed away Monday, June 8, 1998, at her home following a lengthy illness. Age 68 years. Roberta Burckhardt was born February 17, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew to womanhood in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a graduate of the University of Louisville and received her Master's Degree in Zoology from the University of Michigan. She married Frederick W. Case, Jr. February 14, 1953; he survives her. For the past 45 years they made their home in Thomas Township. She taught school at Handley and Liskow Schools and was employed by W.L. Case and Company for many years. In recent years she served on the Technical Advisory Committee on Endangered and Threatened Plants for the Michigan D.N.R. and did some private consulting on environmental problems. She served several years on the Thomas Township Library. She lectured nationally in the United States and Canada and authored a number of technical and horticultural articles. She was, with her husband, a co-author of the book Trilliums which was published in 1997. Her special interest in gardening centered upon wildflowers and water lilies and their hybridization. She was a member of many technical organizations among them the Saginaw Valley Audubon Society, the Saginaw Valley Orchid Society, the Michigan Orchid Society, a member of the American Society, an honorary member of the Ann Arbor Orchid Society, a member of the American Society of Herpetologists, Michigan Botanical Club, and the North American Rock Garden Society. Surviving besides her husband are one son and his wife, David and Sheri Case, Hemlock; three granddaughters, Rebecca, Emily and Caitlyn; one brother and his wife, Carl and Pat Burckhardt, Louisville, KY; one brother-in-law and his wife, Win and Mary Case, Saginaw; one sister-in-law Nancy B. Cota, Manassas, VA; 10 nieces, Debbie Kress, Amy Busch, Lisa Burckhardt, Julie Swieczkowski, Mary Lou Case, Susan Case, Kathy Case, Caroline Case, Amy Case, Jennifer Ashby; two nephews, Bob Burckhardt and Stephen Cota; several great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 1998 at the W.L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Rev. Robert H. Byrne and Rev. Asa T. Compton will officiate with burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. from 7:00 to 9:00p.m. Tuesday and 2:00 to 5:00p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00p.m. Wednesday. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the charity of their choice, the Nature Conservancy of Michigan, the Michigan Nature Association, the May Clinic of the Thomas Township Library.
