Stella “Stepka” Kukhahn

Our loving and caring aunt and great-aunt passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at Edgewood Assisted Living with her family at her side; at the age of 96 years. The daughter of the late Anthony and Louise (Semcych) Slyziuk, Stella was born on October 2, 1923 in Grandview, Manitoba, Canada. She graduated from high school with the class of 1940. Stella became a United States Citizen on December 27, 1943. Stella married Albert Kukhahn on June 25, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. Albert preceded her in death on December 17, 1989. Stella worked as a file clerk at Carnegie Steel Company for five years. She then become a child caregiver for many years. Stella enjoyed becoming a part of the families she had compassionately cared for. Stella and her sister, Delores, were very close and always together; working together as housekeepers, shopping, vacationing and visiting their brothers in Florida. She was a member of the Detroit Curling Club, and a long-time member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She moved to Saginaw in 2003. Stella was a friend of many and well-known as a resident of Swanhaven Manor, Shattuck Manor and Edgewood Assisted Living. She enjoyed going to Bob Evans, where Stella’s sweet and generous personality earned her a position as an Honorary Manager. Stella enjoyed watching sports such as hockey and basketball, with her two favorite teams being the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons. Above all, Stella cherished the time spent with her adoring family.

Surviving are two nieces and three nephews: Becky (Steve) Killian; Kenneth Slyziuk; Linda Renda; Robert (Karen) Sauve; David (Anne Marie) Sauve. Also surviving are many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and extended family members. Besides her husband and her parents, Stella is preceded in death by her two brothers and one sister: Michael (Rose) Slyziuk; Ernie (Rose) Slyziuk; Delores (Gerald) Sauve; two nieces: Beverly Salvatore and Patience Haymour.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Shattuck Manor, Edgewood Assisted Living and The Care Team Hospice for their compassionate and loving care of Stella.

Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Road, Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Peter J. Gaspeny will officiate. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Saginaw County Right to Life or Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
