Talivaldis (Talis) Sturis, Saline, MI passed away peacefully Tuesday March 14, 2023 at the Hospice of Lenawee at the age of 91. Talis was born April 12, 1931, in Riga, Latvia to the late Hermine (Ozols) and Juris Sturis Sr. As a child, he fled Latvia during World War II with his family, spending time in displaced persons camps in Germany until arriving in the United States in 1949. Talis served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Talis married Ruda Paeglis in 1957 in Saginaw, MI. Talis retired from General Motors, where he worked for most of his career. He was a member of the Saginaw Latvian Lutheran Church, Daugavas Vanagi (Latvian Welfare Association), and the Latvian Club of Saginaw. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, and vacationing with his family at their property in Alpena, MI.
Talis is survived by his daughter, Ilze Sturis Hallman, granddaughter, Olivia Hallman, and nieces and nephews along with their families: Valdis Geidans, Juris Geidans, Paul Paeglis, Linda Paeglis, Janis Grislis, Ligita Ozolina, Andrejs Sturis, Vija (Sturis) Brodeur, and Kathy (Pasquale) Ricci. He is predeceased in death by his wife Ruda (Paeglis) Sturis, two sons Talivaldis Jr., and Indulis, his son-in-law, Joseph Hallman, and his brother, Juris Sturis Jr.
Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at W.L. Case and Company Funeral Home, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Rev. Biruta Puike will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saginaw Latvian Lutheran Church or to the Latvian Club of Saginaw.
