Valdis Spacs Saginaw, MI A devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, and friend to all he knew, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the age of 90 years. He was born November 16, 1922 in Auri, Latvia and came to the USA with his wife and daughter in 1951. He had been employed by General Motors, Saginaw Steering Gear, retiring after over 40 years of service. He was a dedicated member of the Latvian Lutheran Church where he served as a church Elder for more than 20 years. He also enjoyed singing in the Latvian Club Chorus. Valdis loved nature and animals, particularly horses. A true farmer at heart, he took pride and delight in tending his garden, especially his roses. Mr. and Mrs. Spacs also enjoyed spending many summers with family and friends at their cottage on Burt Lake near Indian River, MI. Valdis was always grateful for the opportunities and life he was able to build as an American citizen. He was known as a hard worker, helpful friend, and a very loyal, caring, kind, and joyful man. He is survived by Ludmila, his wife of 65 years; his daughter, Guna Spacs Svendsen and her husband David of Newton, MA; and his granddaughter, Dr. Sasha Spacs Svendsen. A memorial service will be at 4pm on Friday, January 18 at the Latvian Lutheran Church of Saginaw. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends on Friday from 1-3pm at the W. L. Case and Co.
