Lawrence, William S. (Bill) Saginaw, Michigan
Following a short illness, Bill Lawrence passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Covenant Cooper Hospital at the age of 96. Bill was born October 8, 1917 in Saginaw to the late William H. and Anna (Satterlee) Lawrence. A graduate of Saginaw High School, Bill became a certified engineer while employed by Baker Perkins and remained with the firm his entire career, retiring at age 65. A Staff Sergeant, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific during WWII, Bill was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Nation's second highest award for valor. Bill married Catherine (Kate) Bauer, his wife of 60 years, September 20, 1947. Kate predeceased Bill on January 5, 2008. An active member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a longtime member of the Fordney Club where Bill was still attending meetings through all of last year. Bill also belonged to the Germania Club for many years. Bill enjoyed fishing and continued to fish well into his 90's. Bill is survived by one daughter and three sons and their spouses; Susan Lawrence and husband David Stakor, Rochester; Michael and wife Pat Lawrence, Royal Oak; Mark and wife Nancy Lawrence, Edina, Minnesota; Jeff and wife Debra Lawrence, Saginaw; six granddaughters, Elisabeth (Doug) Stayer, Hannah, Alison, Abigail, Samantha and Sydney Lawrence; a great-grandson, Lucas Hart, and a great-granddaughter, Matilda Stayer; special nieces and nephew, Letty Waters and Sally (Joseph) Heagany, and several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Glenn, Orson, and sister Ethel Waters. Family and friends will remember Bill's ready smile and his dedication to family, country, and church. As per his request, the remains have been cremated and will be interred beside his wife Kate. A memorial service, with military honors, will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at St. John's Episcopal Church 123 N. Michigan Ave., where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until the time of service. The Rev. Daniel Cannon will officiate.
